Governors also want the County Policing Authority regulations
fast-tracked to help curb insecurity and other criminal activities in
the counties.
Although the governors blamed the Mpeketoni attacks on social issues,
they put the Government on notice that such acts should not happen in
the near future.
“The County Policing Authority should be part of the security
architecture of the county and be provided with the necessary support to
execute its mandate,” said Council of Governors Chair Isaac Ruto.
Frequent consultation
He said there should be a structured and frequent consultation between
the national and county governments on security matters, including
prevention of crime and violence.
Addressing Press at CoG offices, Mr Ruto urged the Government to move
with speed and gazette the County Policing Authority regulations for
county security committees to have a framework of engagement to
strengthen security structures.
Flanked by his Deputy and Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya and his Nairobi
counterpart Evans Kidero, Ruto cautioned that insecurity and the current
heightened political tension was adversely affecting the economy.
Ruto accused Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku and the
Government for linking the Mpeketoni attacks to CORD’s political
rallies, warning that such statement could cause more havoc and
disintegrate communities living together.
